Dr.Vikhe Patil Foundation’s Pravara Centre for Management Research and Development (P.C.M.R.D.) organized Industrial visit to Mercedes Benz on 3rd February 2017.
Objective of the visit was to understand working of assembly line production facility of the company and to know various factors steered company to attain leadership in Luxury car market.
Mercedes-Benz India Pvt Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the German Daimler AG, founded in 1994.Mercedes-Benz India is pioneer in manufacturing luxury cars in India.
This plant was set up in 2009 and spread over 100 acres at Chakan. It is rated as one of the top most CKD (Complete Knock Down) plants of Mercedes-Benz globally.
Production line comprises of Synchronized conveyor systems. A special feature of it is having PLC control units for all equipments. This provides adaptability with different vehicle models on common production line and increases flexibility of the production.
All standard processes right from the beginning to finished car production are followed under stringent Quality environment. Reason behind providing the highest quality product by Mercedes Benz is Benchmarking .These are EMS Transfer, X Road Dynamic testing and programming, Frequency controlled measurements for accuracy, Shower testing cabin for simulation of real rain test, High pressure jets and Dynamic movement of cars. The production line also has a flexibility of producing various models and commercial vehicles.
The GLA four-cylinder vehicle has 7 speed dual clutch transmission. It has a maximum output of 136 bhp between 3600 to 4400 rpm .It speeds up from 0 to 100 kmph in 9.9 seconds with a top speed of 205 kmph and fuel efficiency is 17.9 kmpl.
Mercedes-Benz India registered a historic growth of 32% by selling 13502 Units in 2015. The company had a double feat by starting a production of GLA SUV .It has for the first time produced compact cars in its global assembly network along with sedans and SUVs.
The plant has installed capacity of producing 20,000 units in a year .Mercedes Benz has invested over Rs.1000 crores in this plant which is highest for any luxury car brand in India.
The students were made aware of the technologies and robotics used in assembly line which needs minimum time and human intervention.
The students had a great opportunity to visit a company like Mercedes Benz which is a leader in manufacturing Luxury cars. Prof.Devkumar Mahisekar, Prof.Sayali Joshi, M.B.A First and Second year students were present during the visit .
