Vikhe Patil Memorial School, Lohegaon has set the benchmark for conducting activities in such a way that the students not only enjoy but also learn a great deal from it. With the same perspective in view, the Inter- house Debate Competition was held on 31 July 2019. The aim of the competition was to hone public speaking skills of the students and teach them to be articulate while expressing their thoughts and opinions.

The event comprised of two rounds.  Lots were taken out for the first round. Ruby house and Emerald house were pitted against each other and their topic was ‘Education must focus on Math and science rather than music and art’ whereas Sapphire house and Coral house challenged each other on the topic ‘Exam only measures the memory of the students, not their learning’.

Ruby house and Sapphire house beat their respective opponents to reach the second round. Topics for the second round were:

  • Home schooling is better than traditional schooling.
  • School uniforms should be mandatory
  • Is competition a necessary part of education process?
  • Cricket is a religion in India
  • One member of each family must join defence services.

Lots were drawn once again and the finalists got the topic ‘Is home schooling better than traditional schooling?’  Ruby house spoke for the motion and Sapphire house spoke against the motion. They were given twenty minutes to prepare for the final round.

The event had a nail-biting finish with the Sapphire house team emerging as the winners. Hiya Bhat of the Sapphire house was adjudged as the Best Speaker.

All the four teams were well prepared and they used various skills like overstatement, definition, rhetoric, irony etc. to convince the audience. The participants, armed with examples, quotes and data validated and made their arguments more emphatic with right facial expressions, body movements and gestures.

In her address, the principal Ms Candice Braganza emphasized on the importance of power of persuasion as a desired skill.

The event which was aimed to give an impetus to the bright and energetic students and inculcate a spirit of competitiveness and confidence succeeded in its mission and ended on a joyous note.


Activity of the month for July- ‘Advertisement Competition’ for grade 6 and 7 was conducted on 31st July 2019 in Multipurpose Hall on the topic ‘Selling Oxygen’.

This competition initiates a thinking process among children to be able to differentiate between numerous products available in the market and provide students a space to demonstrate their understanding of the media world of advertisement.

All the four houses created innovative advertisement on given topic. Young minds have an ocean of hidden talent and this event gives a platform to students to represent their talents in communication skills and convincing power. This activity helped the students to channelize their energies and make use of their skills and talents which satisfy their instincts. It also helped them to develop and improve the constructive, explorative and inventive abilities of the students which would in turn aid their overall development.  The event was judged by the Principal Ms Candice Braganza, Ms Bindu Manoharan and Ms Radhika Iyer. At the end of the program winners were announced by the Principal Ma’am.

Overall it was an interesting activity.
